Hungary and China: 70 Years of Bilateral Relations in a Changing World

Celebrating the 70th anniversary of the bilateral relations between China and Hungary

Hungary was one of the first countries recognising the People’s Republic of China on the 3rd of October 1949, and the two countries established diplomatic relations subsequently. The Institute for Foreign Affairs and Trade (IFAT) and the China-CEE Institute have jointly prepared a book for the anniversary with papers in Hungarian, English and in Chinese. Members of our Institute, Krisztina Borsfay and Lan Anh Nguyen Luu published their study under the title Future Visions: Narratives of Chinese Children and Adults Living in Hungary.

The study presents a qualitative psychological research, that examines the narratives of (first and second generation) Chinese immigrant children and young adults temporarily living in Hungary, in particular their future plans vision. The interviews were conducted in both Chinese and Hungarian languages, in total 40 Chinese children and young adults from different generations (12-26 years) were involved in the research. Concepts regarding the future were analysed from the aspect of socialization and migration strategies. In the narratives, the world of experiences of both the past and future appears, therefore, in the analysis, experiences of school and social life, Chinese cultural values, Chinese language use, Chinese identity and the time spent in the country of origin (China) were all studied as key factors forming the future vision.
